So why journal: Journaling for capturing

This post follows on from “So why journal?,” where I listed a few reasons why journaling is a sound investment of your time. Here we further investigate the ‘journaling for capturing’ section, expanding those ideas and exploring their benefits.

So why journal?

I can’t, in one post, give you a complete answer to the question “why journal”, because in my notes, on this single subject alone, there are over 7500 words, far too long for a blog post. So this post is just a list of reasons and summary sentences on the main benefits. In later posts I will expand upon them.

The effect of journaling on the senses

At first, creative journaling trains you to see beyond the cursory glance, to become aware of the details that envelop a scene, event or object. But to capture the holistic experience presented to you, you will need to see beyond detail. You will need to let your mind touch those observed details and with your minds-eye see its past, present and future, feel where it exists in the world, and draw on the emotive as well as that which is not present.

Review: Coming to Our Senses; Jon Kabat-Zinn

There is a massive amount of information and wisdom contained in the book about being mindful, about being aware and about countering mindlessness, all of which are key elements of creative journaling but unfortunately the writing style makes it a difficult read.

Journaling might not be for you

There is an essential component of any journal writing and that component is pleasure. This comes in three complementary flavours, first is the pleasure gained whilst making an entry, second is the pleasure derived whilst revisiting previous entries and the final pleasure that of feeling the creative spark ignite inside you as you revisit and recall your entries.

Creativity and Personal Journaling

The starting point of creative journaling is learning to be aware, to actively pay attention to what your senses are telling you. The next stage is to learn how your perceptions are modified by your mind, and be active, not passive, in those perceptions. Finally, make use of these skills to be properly aware of the world that surrounds you.

Journaling for Creativity: What’s the big deal?

Creative journaling uses the power inherent within journaling, focuses it inwards and feeds your inner creativity. As your creativity grows stronger the journal allows you to have dialogue with your creative self, it assists you with meeting the inner artist who resides within you. And with practice this dialogue becomes easier.

And in so doing, a synergy of thought, creativity, memory and awareness is created, one which allows you to become much more than you ever thought you could be.

Hello Again

What is this new passion? It developed from being drawn into the workings of artist’s journals and creative journaling practices; what makes them work and what they offer. It is something that at first glance might appear to be just keeping notes and records, but as you delve deeper into the psychology and techniques of what is going on below the recognisable surface, it becomes ever more fascinating.
